Meet Seamus

Meet Seamus

Sir Seamus, let’s start with you if you don’t mind. How old are you?

Why thank you for having us come to your awesome blog today! I am officially 8. OMC I’m 8! *faints*

Where did your name come from?

Oh, mom’s a weird one; she is part Irish and always thought the name Seamus was wonderful. (Why I don’t know…) Because she didn’t have kids, I got stuck with it! MOL I am also known as Seamie, Ding-Ding, Taco and The Evilness when I steal the treatie bag…mwahahahaa!!

How did you come to live with your humans?

Well, mom was a volunteer for a no kill shelter and they called her and said they had an emergency. There was a 7 wk old kitten with a weak positive FeLV test that needed quarantine and the current foster parent refused to keep me so it was mom or else, and they knew she had a free powder room. Sooooo…she got me and I had two, yes, TWO more FeLV tests because the results kept getting botched, and by the time the third one came back negative, my diabolical plan to stay with her worked! She adopted me that same day. And thus began my life of being “The Evilness” and “Treatie Thief!”

Do you have any fursiblings you live with besides Dex?

Indeed I do. I have a sisfur Rottie/Bernese Mountan Dog mix named, Reese. I rule her with an iron paw. Seriously…I have to keep that beast in check! She tries to kiss me! And I get out what dad calls “the hatchet paw” and chop chop chop at her nose as she runs away from me, backwards – it’s pretty funny. Ugh dog slobber is SO GROSS.

What do you really think of Dex?

That’s a good question! Mom was REALLY worried I’d try to eat him or something because when I lived in Washington, DC (I’m in Idaho now), I ruled the other 7 cats with a vengeance. I can tell you that time, age and the knowledge that Dex is secretly the yin to my yang, has allowed us to be like brothers. Don’t tell him I said that…I still want him to think I’m thug, gotta keep up appearances ya know…

What is your favorite thing to do?

I love to knock the treaties off the table if mom won’t feed them to me at the allotted place and time, and I REALLY love to wake her and dad up by chirping for pets at 3am. Heh heh heh…

Where do you like to sleep?

My favorite place to sleep is with my head on the cool pillow mom crocheted, under the window in my “hidey hole” cushion fort, on the small couch. I also spend exactly 10 minutes in bed with mom and dad at night relaxing then I sleep under mom’s head under the bed until it’s time for pets at 3am.

What would you like to tell people who are scared of black cats?

I would like to tell them that we are about as scary as a piece of packing tape. Seriously, the stigma behind us is sad and wrong. If humans are good, and being good includes being tolerant, then give us a chance. Just because our fur is black, doesn’t mean our hearts are too. And with that said, I’ll refrain further from commenting to allow my brofur, Dex, to talk to y’all…ta-ta!!

Sir Dex, sorry about the wait.. how old are you?

Hello there, no worries at all – well, we’re not quite sure…probably 5? Life was pretty hard before I met mom so I kinda don’t remember my age…I’m 3.5 years old though since I met mom, does that count? MOL

Where did your name come from?

When mom adopted me, I was Cobalt, and it didn’t fit. She looked at me and said, “How about Dexter?” And I mewed a resounding YES to her…contrary to popular belief, I am not named after that TV show. I swear. Mom’s never even seen it! Dad however, calls me Barry White. He said if I were a hooman, I’d be Mister Smooth…that’s why my other nickname is “Sexeh Dexeh”…MOL!

How did you come to live with your humans?

When mom moved from DC to Salt Lake City, she volunteered for a no-kill shelter there and I was in a big glass-front cage, but I was so sad that I was all alone, I hid in my litter and really had no desire to eat or groom myself. She asked the head of the organization if she could take me home to try to coax some life in me (little did she know I’d just been patiently waiting for her the whole time since the first day she pet me) and four months later they called mom and told her that she should adopt me and she agreed. Then mom and dad adopted each other about a year later and we all got along REALLY well. Dad’s my best friend now. I guard him from the dog, sit at his feet, lay in his lap, make muffins on his tummy, basically, I love him best. hehehe (don’t tell mom!)

What do you really think of Seamus?

Well, he is a rambunctious little bugger and he’s always trying to get me to play wrestle and play chase…I humor him sometimes, but he can be pretty irritating … hahaha I’m kidding. I love him. We chill together on the couch between mom and dad and watch TV and stuff…he’s my brofur!

Where do you like to sleep?

I LOVE to sleep on dad’s lap, curled up against mom, in bed with my head on dad’s hip, anywhere my hoomans are really. They saved me when I was a sad, down and out kitty, recouping from my gunshot wound and neck injury so being with them makes me feel most safe.

What is your favorite thing to do?

EAT. I LOVE wet food; I will sit outside the bedroom and stare at the door willing mom to wake up and FEED MEEEEEEEEEE!!! When she comes out I squeak at her and paw at her legs until she does. Ooooh and belly rubs – omc if I could get them all day every day, life would be perfect.

What would you like to tell people about black cats, that they might not know?

Because of the stigma surrounding us, we’re much less likely to get adopted. By nature, we do not photograph well in fluorescent light and we’re ignored at shelters. EXCEPT during Halloween…that’s when it’s really scary because people will adopt us thinking its “cute” to have a black pet or they’ll adopt us and bad things will happen to us…that’s why many shelters don’t allow the adoption of black cats in October, and it really makes sense. PLEASE be kind to ALL black animals, dogs and kitties and fish and birds…we’re all the same on the inside.

Miss Amber, do you have anything to add?

I sure do. Dex is really mellow – which is shocking considering the amount of abuse we presume he went through prior to coming to the no-kill, He has scarring on his hip indicative of a bb or small caliber gunshot wound, and scarring around his neck. Every time I look at him I am SO thankful for his ability to forgive and love without prejudice and I hope and wish every HUMAN would be the same. I have spent 17 years volunteering at no-kills. I have seen horrific situations that would make the reader’s skin crawl, but in all of it, even the worst cases, those animals were loving and sweet. So the next time someone who is afraid of a black animal sees one, remember, its fur is black, but inside it’s just like any other.

The best meme I’ve seen recently is that of a black cat walking towards the camera with the quote, “” And that, ladies and gentlemen, is ALL it is.

I’ve known the greatest joy having black kitties…and will always have them and be thankful for them.

Correction: I have been gently reminded, they do have a facebook page, my apologizes to all my readers, you can find them on their facebook page Dex & Seamie
