Meet Mia Sidener
How old are you Miss Mia?
I was adopted on February 6, 2010 and at that time they estimated my age as 3, so my parents have given me that date as my Birthday and this year I will be 6.
How did you come into your parent’s life?
My parents lost a very special dog in 2009, she was 17 and had arthritis in her back side pretty bad. Anyway, daddy said no more pets but then he was traveling for work and mommy wanted another doggy so she wouldn’t be alone. The first day they went looking at the Dumb Friends League with no luck and then they found a newspaper advertising the opening of the Humane Society of the South Platte River just down the street, so they went looking and found me. I went home with them that same day.
Did you get any training to pick up on your dad’s blood sugar being low?
As you can tell, I bonded with daddy very strongly so it was just something I picked up. They didn’t realize what I was doing for 6 months after they got me, but one night I woke them up, they thought I needed to go out, but I wouldn’t leave the room. When daddy was going back to bed I barked and barked and he realized he wasn’t feeling so good. When he checked his blood it was 53, which is very low for a diabetic. They started to watch and keep track when I became excited, and realized what I was doing.
What do you do when you sense it’s low?
I get excited and want up on him letting him know there is a problem. I also let him know when it is too high.
Do you live with any other furry siblings?
Last January we adopted my sissy Marti, I wasn’t sure about having a sissy at first, but we have become very close.
What is a typical day like for you and Marti?
I usually get up early with daddy for work, he works at home. Marti gets up a little bit later with mommy and then we get a treat. Then I spend time on Facebook catching up with all my friends and saying Good Morning. Then it is time for breakfast, and back to work. I stay with daddy, on the desk, under the desk, wherever and take a nap. When daddy is done with work we usually go for a walk, we have two parks close by and that is our special time. Sometimes we all go shopping or just go home and watch mommy cook dinner. After dinner I lay on daddys lap and watch TV, he watches and I nap.
I see you two like to get snuggles, what else do you like?
I love playing with my squeeky toys, Marti doesn’t like toys but I love them. Mommy says I really need to learn to put them back in the box, but I don’t. She still loves me.
Do you know any tricks?
I fetch daddys glucometer when he needs it to check his blood. I can fetch a frisbee and shake hands and I like to play tag with daddy.
What advice do you have for someone thinking of adopting a dog?
Its a lifetime commitment so you need to be prepared to love, feed and play with a doggy forever.
Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your family?
I think everybody knows how much I love my family and they love me and Marti.
