Extra Love Needed: Meet Sable Tilthead

Author’s Note: I wanted to end the Extra Love Needed Theme this month with a very special interview. This is the story of Sable Tilthead, though he is no longer with us, he is a shining example of how love &  patience can greatly improve the life of any pet.
Sable Tilthead
How did Sable come into your life?
Sable’s mother was a feral in the colony that I take care of…Someone had put her outside when they moved and I started taking care of her along with the others…I had no Idea Fluffy(Sables’) mother was pregnant…she isappeared for a few days and i was worried but after about a week she came back and brought this tiny little black thing in her mouth…it wasn’t moving so I thought it was a dead bird…she dropped it at my feet and then I realized it was a kitten…for the next 18 years he was mine…
Sable was born in October

Where did his name come from?He got his name because he was a black kitten that had a deep red in his fur…

Do they know why his head was tilted?

They think this is why his head was tilted…he simply came this way…
Vestibular disorders are common in cats. The vestibular apparatus (called the labyrinth) is a complex sense organ composed of three semicircular canals, plus the utricle and the saccule. The labyrinth is stimulated by gravity and rotational movements. It plays an important role in balance and orienting the body in space. Inflammation of the labyrinth is called labyrinthitis.

A cat with labyrinthitis has a problem with balance. The animal wobbles, circles, falls and rolls over, and has trouble righting herself. She may lean against the wall for support and crouch low to the floor when walking. The cat often shows rapid jerking eye movements (nystagmus), and her head will usually tilt down on one side. When picked up and turned in a circle, the cat will act even more dizzy. There may be vomiting and deafness.

A common cause of labyrinthitis is inner ear infection. Other causes include stroke, braintumor, head trauma, brain infection, drug intoxication (especially by the aminoglycosideantibiotics), and thiamin deficiency.

A congenital vestibular defect is seen in Oriental breeds. Kittens show a head tilt, circling, and rolling behaviors. Siamese kittens with this condition may also be deaf. There is no cure.

Idiopathic vestibular syndrome is the most common cause of labyrinthitis in cats. The onset is sudden and the cause is unknown. The signs include a head tilt and nystagmus, and cats may have difficulty walking. There is an increase in these cases in July and August in the northeastern United States, suggesting an environmental cause.
He was also diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia(CH)

Did you have another furry children in the house?

At one time we had up to 16 cats…if I couldn’t find homes for them I kept them…most of the ones I kept were Specially abled…I kept them all until they went to the Rainbow Bridge…I now have 6 left…Plus a feral colony made up of peoples cast offs…I had them all TNR’d and adopted if possible…I currently have 10 in the colony…

Sneaking some key lime pie from mama when she got up to get something to drink
Was there anything he couldn’t do?

Sable didn’t let anything stop him…He would jump on the windowsill even if it took him a few tries…he would shake it off and try again…He was a wobbly boy but that didn’t stop him from doing much of anything…he had head tremors especially when he got excited (like I would put his special food plate down)You see I cooked for Sable…almost everything I ate he would eat…I would make his plate first and put it down then make my own…he loved all meats and fish and he loved broccoli and carrots…he had to have dessert after his meal also
he loved Cool Whip…there are pics on his page with it all over his face…he was a messy eater b/c of the tremors but we didn’t mind…He couldn’t run very well…he would fall over and get up and try it again…he used the litter box fine but sometime b/c of the CH he lost his balance and got dirty…his Daddy(Fabio) would give this gentle kitty a bath and he would just sit there like he knew you were helping him…There are pics of him and Fabio on his page also…

Sable’s rocking chair
What were is favorite things to do?

Sable loved to sit on “his” rocking chair or on the desk while we were on the computer…he would stay there for hours(pics also on his page)…He loved to follow us around…we would always have to look down to check if he was there…especially if we were cooking…he loved the smells of the kitchen…he loved to hang out in the kitty house that one of his FB friends sent the cats for Christmas…also in the tunnel(also a gift)…he loved cuddling on the bed…he spent many hours there with his daddy when I was hospitalized for several months…Sable had rough experience on October 29 ,2012…Superstorm Sandy…we live near the bay and were flooded out…it was quite sudden…we had no where to go so a neighbor told us to come upstairs to higher ground but we couldn’t take the cats…the next day when it stopped storming Fabio checked on the cats…all were on high ground except Sable he came out of the bedroom soaking wet…we can only imagine the other cats went high and he got swept up in the water that came rushing in(we had 3′ of water in the house)…bthim being Sable just took it in stride…walking around thru the trashed huse w/o a care in the world…we dried him off cuddled him and he was fine…Sable was the most laid back cat i’ve ever met…my husband(Fabio) and I had to find a place for our cats and ourselves…unfortunately we had to be separated…they went to a sanctuary in So.Jersey and we went to a hotel…for 5 months!! we were separated from our babies…it was pure hell…especially since most are seniors…but as soon as we got back in our home we had our kitties back…

Is there anything else you would like to share about him?

There will never be another Sable Tilthead…Fabio and I still cry about him…would I ever adopt another CH kitty?…absolutely!! We learned a lot from Sable…he was loving…funny…and he never gave up…he was a determined cat who led a full and long life…he always got along well with the other cats…the house seems so empty w/o him and our hearts hurt…

Sable won his first photo contest for Feb 2014…they prize was a mosaic picture of him…as soon as I can afford it I’ll have itframed and hang it over the bed that he spent so many hours on…

I received close to 4000 condolances when Sable passed and he had only had a FB page since the end of January…everyone loved Sable Tilthead he was quite a little character ♥

You can use any pics from his page…I also have more if you need them…Thank you for honoring a very special and deserving boy…Sale Tilthead…Mama and Daddy love you dearly ♥ ♥

Extra Love Needed: Meet Hemi the CH Kitty

Just me

How old are you Hemi?

I will be 7 on July 7th

Where did you name come from?

We named Tank his name because he was SO MUCH bigger than the other kittens. With my disability, dad said I needed just as “manly” of a name. and dad is a Mopar fan! lol

How did you find your forever home?

Mom and Dad actually rescued Mama Cat from an abusive situation when they lived in Florida, and after they took her from her “owners” they told mom and dad she might be pregnant. they couldn’t bear to fix her and abort the litter so they let Mama have her kittens, 5 of us, and re-homed everyone after we spent 12 weeks being socialized.

When did you start doing physical therapy? And what do they do with you?

Physical therapy started in August. we do stretches, balance activities, work in the water treadmill, laser therapy, and acupuncture!

Do you take any medications?

Just joint supplements

When/How were you officially diagnosed with CH?

Pretty much right when I was a baby, mom researched it before she even took us for our first round of shots, and the vets confirmed it.

Physical Therapy back in February. The water treadmill helps a lot.

Can you tell me a little bit about CH?

It is a neurological disorder that affects the cerebellum, which controls motor function and coordination. It is most common when the mother cat is exposed to or contracts Distemper while pregnant. There is no “cure” but the condition does tend to even out over time, and as we are learning, it can be improved and dealt with

What limitations do you have right now?

I cannot walk on my own. I could as a baby but I fell over so much I got sick of it, and chose to scoot and crawl. I have issues using the litter box with any accuracy. When I was younger I had very irritable bowels and (sorry for TMI) varied between constipated and the opposite a lot. God thing is I got used to baths, so the water treadmill was no big deal for me!! I also have thin skin which can tear easily if I get knots in my fur, but that has all improved with exercise, and Blue Buffalo Grain Free diet.

Upset tummies are cured by being a kitty burrito with mommy snuggles

I saw that you took your first steps with all four feet, that had to exhausting, congrats!

First steps with all four paws on 4/8

Do you live with any fursiblings? ‘If so do any of them next extra love & care like you?

I have Mama Cat, my real mom, but she has kind “shunned” me since 2 months old. she has recently started to come around and is taking a bit of interest in me again.

The newest member of the family, Scout

I also have Osa, Scout, and Buttons.

My littermate, Tank he’s 20lbs and very gentle with me

Tank is my actual litter mate and closest to me. He cleans me, cuddles me, and plays gently with me. He’s HUGE (20 lb tabby) I am only 10 lbs, but he has always seemed to understand I am a little different.

Miss Osha, my fursibling
Sisfur Buttons the Bobtail

How can people donate to help your family pay for your physical therapy?

I have a Youcaring donation site which goes to mom’s paypal and gets transferred for each PT session. I also have an Amazon wishlist for help with other basic needs

Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your family?

Mom and Dad love all animals and we have fish and 3 dogs too!!! Mom and Dad hope one day to open an animal sanctuary / rescue for elderly and disabled and special needs cats and dogs.

Extra Love Needed: Meet Whiskey the Deaf Therapy Dog

I was pound dog, about to be euthanized, look at me now!
How old are you?
I am 5 yrs old

Where did your name come from?

Because of my colors and I was so filthy when they found me, my buddy said I look like a disregarded empty bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey on the side of the road
Were you born deaf or did something happen to make you deaf?
I was born deaf, due to irresponsible breeders
How long did it take for you to learn hand signals?
Not long, my new home already had a deaf dog here, so when in doubt, I just did what she did, she was a great teacher for me, her name was Patience, she was in a book and won Petsmart Charities first ever contest for Most Magnificent Rescue Dog in North America
Do you live with any other fursiblings?
My first friend was Patience, about a year and half ago they needed a therapy dog in heaven so she grew some wings and left us, but she taught me well and I know she is proud of me, we have a cat named Buster, he was left on our porch a couple of months after I came, he was just a kitten and he’s still about half feral, but he likes me, then last year my people were fostering a deaf mini-aussie for Deaf Dogs of Oregon, but when it came to leave, they let her stay, she’s also learning to be a therapy dog like me, her name is Izzy.
How long are your visits as a therapy dog?
They are usually around and hour and half to two hours, sometime we do events like Special Olympics were I’m there all day.
Looking quite handsome if I do say so myself.
I saw you volunteer at 7 different places, that’s amazing. Can you tell me a bit about them?
1. The Children’s Center is a rehab hospital for children with spine and brain injuries and congenital and developed disabilities, I work with the OT and help the kids
2. JD McCarty Center, its a school for children with  developed disabilities and we help the OT their too.
3. West Moore High School, it has the largest Special Ed Dept. in the state. I go and visit with my friends who can’t walk and lay on the mats next to them, then I go to the autistic class and they take me for walks around the school, and after that I do P.E. or gym with the 2 high functioning classes, its a blast.
4. The Toby Keith Foundations “Kids Koral “, its a place for children undergoing cancer treatment and they families to stay and its free, their they take of my leash, give my little cowboy and cowgirl friends a bag of balls, some Frisbee, and bubbles, I love to chase bubbles, and for 2 hours we just play.
5.  The Dale Rogers Center, it was started by Roy Rogers, its a place for adults with disabilities are trained and hired to go back into the work force, I visit one of there special groups and some of the other worker came and visit with us too.
6. The Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled, we call this place our home, its a place for adult with disabilities to stay during the day so there families can work and help support them, we do Special Olympic with them, and that’s were I trained to become a therapy dog.
7. Bridge Creek Veterans Reading Program, we live in a small rural community outside OKC, our school system has a program for 1st graders helping them learn to read, my buddy thinks its important for me to visit with children who aren’t sick and hurt too.
What has been the best reaction you’ve gotten from people?
When I work with the small children who are hurt, sometimes something small is really big, but most people can’t believe I’m deaf or that I was found at the dog pound.
This was me when I first came home, I was a mess.
What would you or your parents like to say to people who are worried about adopting a deaf dog or any pet that may need extra love & care?
DEAF DOGS ROCK, I’m just like any other dog, once you learn and become part of the family, its all about body language, I know dogs who can hear and don’t know a thing. but I really don’t think my people know were deaf, because you can tell their talking to us all the time, we just don’t have the heart to tell them we can’t hear.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself?
I would like to add one thing, to all the people who didn’t want me, mistreated me and dropped my at the pound twice, because you thought I was dumb and couldn’t learn because I was deaf. I could learn, but you were just incapable of teaching me, but someone did teach me and I did learn and now I am a therapy dog, that does work for the Toby Keith Foundation, so from one of my friend’s songs ” HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW!!”
Dedication:
This article is dedicated to the loving memory of Patience, who taught me so much. We love & miss you.
Me & Patience. She taught me all I know and I know she’s proud of me.

Extra Love Needed: Meet Louie

Sun puddle, I love you.

How old are you?
I will be a year old on April 23, 2014!

Where did your name come from?
Because I was born blind, my foster dad (Fred of Phaedra & Phriends) named me after Louis Braille. He developed the Braille system for the blind.

How did you find your forever home?
As soon as I had been found, my foster mom (Marty of Phaedra & Phriends) posted a picture of him and immediately received a text from my mom that said, “If I wanted him, would you let me have him?” (my mom is hearing impaired, so she didn’t know if that would be a problem), but my foster mom said, “of course”, and the rest is history!

Isn’t this a pawesome cat tree?

I read that you were born blind, how long did it take you to “map” your forever home?
I spent the first week in only one room with just mom while I got used to being in a new house and then after that, I got to explore the rest of the house. Mom was surprised about how well I did and how fast I learned, but she kept a litter box upstairs because the steps scared me. I’d go up the stairs but not down them, so it took a few weeks until I got the hang of them, they were my biggest challenge.

Do you live with any fur siblings?
I live with two fur siblings:
Kacy is a long haired, brown and black polydactyl tiger, and she’s going to be 3 years old this year. I love playing with Kacy but sometimes she hisses at me when she’s tired of playing.
Max is a short haired, brown and black tiger, and he’s 5 years old. I like to chase him when he’s hogging mom’s lap, but what I love most about Max is that he gives the best baths!
(Our fur sibling, Dakota, crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year about 5 months after I joined the family, so I have helped fill the void that his passing left.)

My brown & black brother, Max
Miss Kacy, the brown & black tiger

Do they treat you any different? (that you know of?)
No, I don’t think Kacy or Max even know I can’t see.

Can you hear things they can’t?
Of course I can! Being blind gives my super hearing, so I can hear better than most cats (just don’t tell them that).

I saw that you got to sniff snow, what did you think of it?
It made the inside of my nose cold, so I like being an indoor cat.

How often to you get to go outside when it’s warm?
It’s just started to get warm now, so we’ve not gone out much yet and I didn’t go out too much last year because I was still a baby.

Do you go on a harness or get to roam around supervised?
Mom has a handmade safety harness that I wear, when I go outside.

Let no rug go unexplored!

What is your favorite thing to do?
Play!!! I have TONS of toys to chose from, I attack mom, chase the big kitties and I snuggle. I have to admit… my favorite toy is a red bear that my foster mom gave to me when I was a kitten. I drag it around the house all the time and even sleep with it.

What would you or your mommy like to say to people hesitant about adopting a blind cat?
Blind cats are really no different than having any other cat. Yes, they will run into things, and yes, there may be some accidents, but we humans aren’t perfect either. The main difference is finding toys that stimulate them… toys that crinkle, toys that squeak, toys that rattle, toys with texture.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
What I have learned from having Louie and spending time with Marty & Fred of Phaedra & Phriends is: “Disabled does not mean disposable.” They have every right to live a full and happy life as every other animal. One day when Marty and I were out with Louie and Phaedra (who is also a blind cat) a lady said to us that it was cruel for us to let them live and they should have been euthanized. Marty replied simply, “We don’t euthanize humans because of blindness.”

I want to share that the second I saw the very first picture of Louie that was posted on the Phaedra & Phriends site, something just burned in my heart and I knew I needed to bring him into my home, because I instantly fell in love with him. Texting Marty to ask if I could adopt him was the best thing I have ever done. Louie is there when I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I wake up, and when I go to sleep. Louie is my angel.

Extra Love Needed: Meet Aerostotle the Blind Vat Philosopher Cat

Just me laying around

How old are you?
Presently, I am 8 months and 2wks old. My birthday is July 4th.

Where did your name come from?
I was given the name Aristotle, after the Greek Philosopher, when I came into the shelter, but mum changed the spelling to Aerostotle.

How did you wiggle your way into your forever mum’s heart?
I think it was the other way around. Mum didnt see me until after I had both eyes removed and all I did was face the back of the cage. But when she came in to meet me and she said my name, I turned around and went straight to the front of the cage (that was the very first pic mum took of me). It was then I knew I was going to a forever home. We both fell in love with one another hearts. Mum rescued me at 5wks <3

May I ask if it was scary to have the surgery to remove your eyes?
I was itty bitty and had them removed at 3-4 weeks old…so, I don’t remember anything

How long did it take for you to adjust?
It only took a few days..I had to learn my new surroundings, the new sounds in my environment and to learn my new siblings: Sobe da ONE Kenobe, Hannah and LillyBelle.

Who can resist this face?

What tips does your mum have for fostering a blind cat?
It takes a lot of time and patience and trust. We may be blind, but we can live a very happy and stable blife with the proper care. Always do research..adopting/fostering/rescuing a specially-abled kitty may sound cool and awesome, ye have to have the committment and ye want to do it–feel it in the heart.

How did you win the Most Kissable Kat Contest?
Who can’t resist kissing this cute face???

What are some of your favorite things to do?
I like to play with my turbo scratcher, and kitty bunk box, play with my siblings…be wif my mummyand give her hugs and kisses. I like to make my “pawsies” smile and laugh when they watch one of my  videos or see a pic. I have lots of cwinkly and noisey toys, so i play with them also.

You pose so well, did your mum teach you or are you a natural?
I am a naturale

I’ve got my bowtie on and I’m ready to share my philosophies on life.

How did you become a philosopher?
I take a picture I have and add a morale to the end..like how we should “pay it forward”, or always take the challenges

What are some of your philosophies so far?
Life is too short so learn to “let go and move on” Always help out the ones who has no one. My blindness doesn’t keep me from doing anything, it may be more challenging, but in the end, I am a winner.

Is there anything you or your mum would like to add about you or blind cats?
Just do the research and realize it is a life time committment, just like any animaux ye adopt/rescue. Just because Aero is blind, he has other senses that helps navigate him through life–his hearing is heightened and he can follow sounds real well, he has a good sniffer. My mission in life is to educate people that blind cats can lead a normal life given the proper care and love. Everyday is a challenge for specially-abled and handicapable animals of all species and breed.

Sun puddles are awesome

I am still amazed what Aero can do on a daily basis. He has no fear…none.

Opt to Adopt: Meet Blackie & Bubba

Author’s Note: This is the first in what will be a weekly theme featuring pets from Pet Guards Angels & Tampa Bay Cat Alliance, both shelters house cats and do not kill. I’ve worked with Pet Guards Angels personally for nearly two years and started volunteering with Tampa Bay Cat Alliance in January of this year. Both have limited resources and funds, so I agreed to help both of them by listing some of their felines that are available for adoption. If I can get one feline a fabulous forever home, then I have accomplished something. So please if you are interested, use the contact information below and go take a look at these felines in person if possible or give the shelter a call. Thank you so much and remember, you can’t save all the cats, but for one cat you are the world. = ^..^=

Bubba:

Her profile page on Petfinder: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/28671580

Info:

Bubba’s a big, handsome, playful guy that adores catnip toys. He has lived with other cats & seems to be fine with small, cat friendly dogs but would be fine as an only pet, too. Bubba would prefer a home without small kids.

Bubba does not care for small children.

Contact Info:

He is available at our adoption center at 950 Hardy Rd. in Cuyahoga Falls , Ohio.

Please call (330) 431-9391 or email petguardsangels (at) yahoo (dot) com to set up an appointment to meet all of our fabulous felines.

Blackie:

Blackie
Blackie

Info:

Blackie is as his name suggests a black cat. He is FIV+ and is an older gentleman. He was living in a feral colony behind a Dunkin Donuts, where he unfortunately contracted FIV from another cat due to his non-aggressive nature. When the store closed, the entire colony was trapped, spayed/neutered and re-homed, due to him being non-aggressive he was taken in and has been in the shelter since.

He is very affectionate and is looking for a good home where he can live out the rest of his days with a home to call his own.

Blackie is FIV+ and needs to be in a home as the only cat or with other FIV+ cats.

Contact Info:

He is available at our shelter located at  11720 U. S. Highway 19 Suites 21-22 Port Richey, FL  34668. In the same shopping center as P.A.W.S and right next to the P.A.W.S thift store. Please note we are not in any way affiliated with P.A.W.S.

Please call (727) 859-7801 or email tbcatalliance(at) gmail (dot) com if you are interested in him or any of the other adoptable cats at the shelter.

Extra Love Needed: Meet Deuce Two Legged Kitty from Oklahoma City

I'm Deuce
I’m Deuce

How old are you?

Well, I am either 4 or 5.  Not quite for sure…but, somewhere around there.

Where did your name come from?

I was named Deuce by the Sherriff in Choctaw who came and got me after I was found by a couple of kids.  Mom figured she would keep the name since I had already been in quite a few news interviews and articles.

How did you wiggle your way into a forever home?

When I was found in August of 2011, it was speculated that I lost my back legs in an abusive situation.  The news stations were running stories about me and my mom, who happened to volunteer for The Humane Society at the time (they were the rescue who took me in), got a hold of the director there and put in a request to adopt me when I was healed from my injuries and ready for a forever home.

Do you remember what happened to your legs?

Well, it’s speculated that it was from an abusive situation as there had been other animal abuse in the area.  I was found outside in a trailer park by a couple of kids who were outside playing.  I was full grown, but only weighed 4 lbs. when I was found.  The vet who doctored me suspected I had been trying to survive outside in the Oklahoma July heat with my injuries for around a month and a half.

Did you need any medication or therapy while recovering?

When mom first got me, I was very nervous. People still make me nervous.  In fact, noises, other animals, anything loud and anything quick scares me.  Mom had to put me on some anti-depressants when she first adopted me as I was having a few behavioral issues, like beating up my brothers and marking the rugs (both of which have resolved about 95%).  But, the best medicine and therapy that I received was just unconditional love and I still get that almost every second of every day….sometimes mom loves on me too much even.  😉

How long did it take for you to learn to get around on two legs?

Well, I had to fend for myself for about a month and a half outside before they found me so I learned pretty quickly how to get around to the best of my ability.

Do the other animals in the house treat you different?

I have three other kitty brothers and at first they just stared at me – they just really could not figure out what was wrong with me.  I still don’t cuddle with them or anything – I was a stray to begin with so I kinda love in a different manner than my brothers.

I read you have a three legged brother named Finn, do you two play together often?

It’s really hard for me to understand how to play with other animals.  Until I was found, I had to fight for my food as it was sparse and far inbetween…..  Don’t get me wrong, I love playing with a string or a play mouse, I just don’t understand how to play with other animals.  Mom said that’s ok, though.  She loves me just the way I am!!

Do you live with any other fursiblings?

Yes, I have two four legged brothers and then Finny, my three legged brother.  We are all pretty spoiled.  Mom puts us first before anything in her life.

What would you like people to know about cats that have one or two legs missing?

Well, I can do anything my brothers can do (with the exception of jumping).  I can even run and climb to the top of the 6 foot cat tree.  If it has fabric, I can make my way up it.  So, really, people automatically assume that I won’t or can’t have a normal life, but honestly I really can!  You know when you look at something long enough you kinda look past the imperfections.  Well, mom hardly even notices that I have a disability anymore.  It really does not affect my daily life in any way, shape or form.

What are some of your favorite things to do?

I really love cuddling with my mom and looking out of the windows and front door at my outside porch brothers.  I can relate to them….I was one once.

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself or your family?

Actually, mom asked if I would add how important it is to adopt a rescued pet, and especially consider a senior pet or a disabled one.  There are so many animals at so many rescues, including Free To Live Animal Sanctuary, the rescue my mom volunteers for, who get looked over because of age or disability, even though they can be just as vivacious and playful and healthy as any other animal.  Also, please consider volunteering for an animal rescue.  Even if it’s just a few hours a month.  I promise, it will be the most rewarding thing you’ve ever done!!

Pet Product Review: Beneful Canned Dog Food

019

Beneful Canned Dog Food

I like the fact that today’s canned dog food resembles human stew as opposed to that horrid stuff we fed our dogs prior to the 1990’s. Back then it looked like mystery meat cut in squares, with gravy, smished into a can. Alpo and Gravy Train come to mind. Hopefully it tasted better than it looked or smelled.

Today’s canned dog food is more of a gourmet dining experience for dogs, and most of them are created by gourmet chefs. (I have previously reviewed Rachel Rays complete line of gourmet dog food for this blog.)

021 (1)

Our Beneful sample came in the form of 3- 3 ounce cans of Tuscan Style Medley wet or canned food. Beneful makes two other medley style dinners, and in bigger cans.

As you peel the lid back, you can see the wholesome goodness. It looks just like human stew, and the smell is very tolerable. My dog tore into his meal.

Right on the box it says “Great for mixing”. I didn’t mix it with my dog’s dry food, because I needed to add photos to this piece, and we needed to see the actual canned food. So I added it on top of his dry kibble.

Bowzer never finishes his dinner in one sitting; he saves some for a midnight snack. But the night he ate Beneful Tuscan Style Medley, he ate the entire contents of his bowl and got an extra long walk.

Tuscan Style Medley includes beef, carrots, rice and spinach in a gravy sauce. Quite savory and classy for a dog food!!!!

Beneful is sold at discount boxy stores, pet supply stores, and of course online at amazon.com.

Bowzer normally does not eat beef, and many dogs are allergic to red dye #5, which aids in beef flavoring, so choose a flavor where chicken is the main ingredient.

I rate Beneful Tuscan Style Medley canned dog food two thumbs up, while Bowzer gives it four paws up!!!

When you google Beneful Dog Food, you will encounter a few sites devoted to news of a recall and/or that Beneful dry dog food is killing dogs. These issues were back in 2006, seven years ago, I am sure they have fixed whatever problem they had.

For information, a listing of all dry and wet foods, contests and coupons, go to http://www.beneful.com/ . It’s one stop info.

Shopathome.com and a few other sites offer coupons, but so does www. beneful.com.

Extra Love Needed: Meet Keebo

Hello! I'm Keebo
Hello! I’m Keebo

How old are you?

I am 3 years old..my birthday is in sept. But I am a tiny lil thing, I barely weigh 2 pounds!

Where did your name come from?

My mommy named me Keebo because it stands for ” Hope”.

Can you tell me a little bit about your condition?

I have a condition called Radial Hypoplasia,or RH,  a condition where my forelegs are abnormally short and twisted.

Is Oliver still like a daddy cat to you?

When my Grammy and mommy brought me home from that shelter, Olliver, which is my mommy’s first kitty, wow was he mad at my mom! He wouldn’t let her near him for 3 days! She was really upset and this made her cry because she thought she had hurt ollivers feelings so bad!! Grammy assured her he just needed some time to adjust , but for safety reasons, at night they kept us separated. Then one day, Grammy saw Olliver just walking back n forth, back n forth…it took her a moment to realize…he had me in his mouth!!! She was nervous at first but she just kept a close eye on him to see what he would do…and he finally put me down in a corner…and started giving me a BATH!! From then on, he has been my ” daddy” and yes, he is still protective of me and gives me baths!! I lubs him an awful lot!

How many extra toes do you have on your back legs?

I'm standing on my back legs, neat huh?
I’m standing on my back legs, neat huh?

I have 5 toes on each back paw…and my back feet are really big!!! Pretty sure God gave me these big ole feet and an extra long tail to balance myself on…since the front part of me is so ” short” with my crooked front paws! I am able to stand up on my back paws and balance myself, and stretch really high to look around, or I can squat for a long time to! That’s why kitties like us are often called ” squittens” and ” Roos” because how we stand up on our hind legs with our little paws clutched in at our side and resemble kangaroos! I often wave my paws, to everyone it looks like I am ” begging” for something.. Grammy swears I am trying to tell her something really important, but in reality I do it for balance! But its so darn adorable I have mastered it because I know everyone just loves it!

How high can you jump?
I can jump, really high with those big back feet to! I am able to jump on and off the couch and Grammy’s bed. The only problem is, the jumping down. I do a ” faceplant” because I am unable to break my fall with my paws. This does not ever, ever stop me tho! Grammy put a really comfy house beside her bed for me as a little step stool to help so its not so high, and eventually I heard them talking about building a ramp for me so I can walk up and down off the bed. My very favorite place to be, is wherever my Grammy is laying down!! Thats when I know I can get her complete attention! If I don’t , I just sit right on her chest til she sees me!

What is your favorite things to do?

I would have to say, my very favorite thing to do….is to play with my wire toy. Grammy calls it my ” doingy” . One of my friends off Facebook sent me a few for a Christmas present, and its just a tiny little wire covered in a hard plastic covering… They saw me playing with bread ties and told us how dangerous those are for kitties!! So they sent me these! And my goodness sometimes I play so long I just tucker myself out!! The best part is when I push it under the doors … Then come get Grammy and make her get it out for me!! Sometimes I do this allll day long!! But she never gets tired of opening those doors n letting me get my toy!!

What is your favorite type of bag?

I lub bags
I lub bags

I also love bags!!! Especially brown paper bags!! They make great hiding places!! And if there is a little hole in the back of them, then I can peek thru…and swat at anyone walking by!! For some reason, I like to chew on plastic bags , Grammy gets upset when she sees me do this tho!

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself or your ability?
One last thing I would like to add about me and my ” physical difference” is this….When my Grammy and mommy went to the shelter to get me, that kid in there used to get me out of my cage just to ” watch me army crawl” because I was so tiny I could only use my elbows to crawl on the ground! ( we are pretty sure he did this often just to get a laugh out of it!.) But when he put me back in my kennel I stayed as far back as I could so he wouldn’t grab me again!! I was so scared!! But grammy never took her eyes off me the whole time my mommy looked at the other kitties. Grammy knew if they didn’t take me, no one else would because they wouldn’t want to deal with a ” defective” cat. But as I got home and got loved, I got better and stronger. And now Grammy says that I rescued her! Love can from the most surprising places, and animals that don’t ” look the same” as others…well we know it! And we also know that when you CHOOSE US, you are giving us an amazing chance at a life we never thought we would have had! So, not only will you change our lives, but you will watch your world be transformed in a way you never knew possible.
Special needs animals, are just that…they make you realize you had a special need in your life for them that was empty, and then you wonder how you ever fully lived before they came along!

Do you have any advice for other cats that need extra love and are looking for a home?

( From Grammy… I truly believe that kitties are golden guardian angels, and they know how to stand in the light of Gods eternal love…when we are feeling down, angry, sad, hurt,,we have our kitties, ESp keebo, to go to..,as our own personal therapy, as they can rid themselves of the darkness we carry. )

Did I mention I lub bags? I do.. don't worry granny cuts the handles for me.
