Milk Bone Trail Mix for Dogs

a review by Miss Sharon

Trail Mix is a brand new product from Milk Bone. Unlike other edible commercial dog products, these are all natural, with NO CORN, preservatives, or artificial flavorings.
Instead, you and your canine pal with find yummy morsels of oats, beef and sweet potato.
When I first saw the package I thought the sweet potato chunks were carrots, and this piqued my curiosity, since our vet keeps telling me to reduce our dog food by ¼ cup, and replace it with green beans or carrots. I thought maybe this was a creative way to get him to eat his veggies. And I was pleasantly surprised when he gobbled up every piece.
Then I checked the package and was even more amazed my dog was actually eating and enjoying sweet potato chunks!!!
The sweep potato chunks looked like dried carrots, the beef is a chewy morsel, and the oats are light and dark colored itty bitty tiny miniature milk bones.
Just like the package advertises, Trail Mix is both chewy and crunchy, and the chunks and morsels are all one bite snacks. No more leftover crumbs of dog snacks on your hard floor or in your carpeting!!!!

milkbone2

The sweet potato and beef are soft and chewy, while the oats are hard and crunchy.
Trail Mix is perfect for a training reward, since every bite is bite size, with a variety of flavors and shapes.
I make my dog work for his snacks, so with these small bite size snacks, and others like them, which I will review soon, I have taught my Bowzer to catch his treats. Those he doesn’t catch, I get to toss it again. I give him 5-7 snacks each evening, which is hardly over working him; sometimes I make him jump for them. My desk has more dog and cat
treats in it, than office supplies!!!! All of my animals gather at my desk for snack time while mom works at home.
If you don’t think your dog will eat sweet potatoes, try playing a game like we do, though I don’t think you will have any problems, if my dog of all dogs, gobbled them up.
Trail Mix is yet another package where the manufacturer crams the bag full. I love these companies and products. In a day where cereal boxes are filled 1/3 of capacity, it is soooo
refreshing to find pet snacks crammed full of product.
The price is right, too, providing you shop at Target, WalMart, CostCo, or other retailer. Once again, I found PetSmarts sale price to still be higher than Target. Target has them
priced at $2.89 for a 9 ounce bag, and PetSmarts sale price was $4.49, regularly 4.99.
I also saw a jug of Trail Mix, which must have been the 3 lb mega-size, which is perfect for families with multiple dogs, or for a shelter or rescue organization, online for $13.99.
I didn’t see this size at Target.
You can print coupons if you visit http://www.milkbone.com/ . Plus you can view the different sizes of Trail Mix, and review their other dog and puppy products.
The best thing about Milkbone is that a portion of every MilkBone product sales is given to their charity which trains service dogs. You can read about that on their website, too.

milkbone

Bowzer and I give MilkBone Trail Mix 4 paws and two thumbs up.

Pets that Blog: Meet Cody & Dakota

Introduce yourself:

Well for us…there are TWO of us! This interview was directed at me (Cody from Cat Chat) but I felt bad because my Sheltie brother has a blog as well so we are BOTH going to answer these questions.

Name:

Cody from Cat Chat and Dakota from Dakota’s Den

Age:

we both are six years old.

How you came into your parents lives:

CODY: I’ll answer first. I was adopted. I was adopted on July 28th, 2007 two weeks after mom’s “soul kitty” (Bobo) crossed the bridge at age 18. Mom was devastated. Bobo had been her only pet for those entire 18 years. Mom went to an adoption event that PetCo had right after Bobo died, she saw me but didn’t adopt me! She wasn’t ready. Then 2 weeks later she saw me and my litter mates at the PetCo adoption event. Mom picked my sister up first (because she looked like Bobo) but she didn’t like my Mom. Then Mom picked up my brother, same thing. Then Mom said “what about that gray one? Let me hold him’’ That was IT!! JACKPOT! I attached myself to my Mom’s lap and arms and didn’t let go. Then I attached myself to her heart and then she adopted me!

DAKOTA: for me it was different. Mom had always wanted a Sheltie, since she was a little girl. Bobo was an “only” pet and NEVER would have accepted another cat or dog. After Bobo crossed the bridge, Dad started a “Sheltie Search” We weren’t blogging at the time and didn’t know about pet transport or anything and there were no Sheltie rescues near our home. Dad and Mom bought me at 8 months old from a responsible breeder who was selling me because she couldn’t “show” me. Mom’s Sheltie dream was answered!

Why do you blog?

CODY: Mom lost her job in 2007 due to downsizing and was depressed. She saw the movie Julie & Julia and when she learned about blogging she said “I can do that!!” But she needed an assistant and she had me do quite a bit of the blog work. We started Cat Chat in October of 2009.

DAKOTA: I started my blog when people saw me on Cody’s blog and said that I needed my own blog too! I started Dakota’s Den in April of 2011.

What is your favorite post?

CODY: wow! I have A LOT of “favorites!” But it would have to be: a super old post from June 11, 2010. I hardly had any followers then, and this one deserves to be seen! http://opcatchat.blogspot.com/2010/06/cody-gets-his-say-his-rebuttal-to.html

My least favorite?

My first post on October 25, 2009. I had no clue what I was doing http://opcatchat.blogspot.com/2009/10/welcome-to-cat-chat.html

DAKOTA: my favorite of mine would be a recent one http://dakotasden.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/what-do-gentlemen-do/ And my least favorite would be: http://dakotasden.wordpress.com/2012/08/31/friday-find-ooo-la-la-cardinal-pet-cares-viva-la-dog-spa-dog-facial-wipes-you-can-win/ I LOVED the product but Hated how Dad humiliated me!

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

CODY AND DAKOTA I think we can both answer this one. Our favorite thing about blogging is all of the other dogs, cats, turtles, ferrets, rabbits, pigs, etc etc and their pawrents that we have met along the way. We have both made some fantastic furiends through blogging and that has been the biggest reward! Many of them will be furiends for life!!

What to you dislike about blogging?

Sometimes there is just too much pressure! Mom has us cutting back our schedule a bit because it is hard to post nearly every day of the week and keep up with the over 100 blogs that we follow. But we love it and hope that you like us too, we hope to keep blogging as long as we are able to.

Sneak peek on future posts?

CODY: ohhhh our excitement just passed! We had major give-aways in April that just ended.

DAKOTE: wait! I have one! I will be representing a special dog food brand at BlogPaws, stay soon to see who it is!

CODY: I will continue to be a Catvocate for World’s Best Cat Litter and I also am a member of the Purina Cat blogger panel.

What blogs do you read that you would like to share?

Oh wow!!!! TONS of them!!! You know what? Since we follow well over 100-200 blogs we really don’t want to list anyone, not because we don’t think they are great but because inevitably we are going to leave out some of our favorites and we do NOT want to hurt anyone’s feelings. If you see us commenting around the blog-o-sphere (and you WILL) rest assured that we like the blogs we are commenting on. We just follow WAY too many to single anyone out. If we are following you and leaving you a comment, then…we LOVE YOU!

What are you thoughts on spaying/neutering?

SPAYING/NEUTERING is a must!!! It is good for the dog, good for the cat and impawtant to help the unwanted pet population from continuing to grow!

Anything else you want to add about you?

Well, Cody and I are bummed that we won’t be at BlogPaws (it is too far from Michigan) BUT MOM WILL BE THERE!!! Mom is the head of the “Newbies” group for the BlogPaws conference and she is sooooooo excited to see everyone this May! It will be Mom’s second trip to BlogPaws, so she is excited about re-connecting with furiends and meeting new ones!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to interview us today! It was fun!!! Kitty Kisses from Cody from Cat Chat

And Barks and licks and love from Dakota of Dakota’s Den

Author’s Note: Photos were used with permission. Many many thanks to Cody & Dakota and their mom for taking time to answer the questions. You can visit them at Cat Chat and Dakota’s Den.

Current Events: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Two Current Events Related to Pets I wanted to touch base on:

kitten-thrown-from-car

Kitten Thrown from  moving van in Tarpon Springs, FL

Click either of the below links for the full story:

Yes, this happened  on April 11, a kitten was thrown from a moving van three towns south of me. Thankfully someone saw this and picked up the kitten and got it to the vet. The poor little kitten was dehydrated, covered in fleas and has a limp. He will have to have his leg amputated but he will live.

They are still looking for the person who drove the maroon van that was spotted to have thrown the kitten out of the window.

Don’t worry this story has a happy ending, Smokey has a foster home.

Woman who says she couldn’t afford vet awaits sentencing

Click any one of the below links for the story:

This is a very sad story of unintentional neglect just one town south of me. A woman on a limited income didn’t take her dog to see a vet to take care of ongoing health issues, her dog Harley had tumors, heartworms and earmites.  By the time the dog was taken in by the authorities, the poor 14 year old chow mix was unable to stand without support and was helped to the Rainbow Bridge as there was nothing that could be done to help him at this stage.

The owner was sentenced to 6 months of house arrest, 200 hours of community service and 3 years of probation.

The article does have some additional information on where to get affordable vet care:

Options for more affordable animal care

Some clinics offer low-cost options for spaying, neutering and basic pet care:

  • PetLuv NonProfit Spay & Neuter Clinic, 7348 Broad St., Brooksville, (352) 799-9990
  • Planned Pethood, 5053 Gall Blvd., Zephyrhills, (813) 779-7000
  • Pasco Animal Welfare Society, 11720 U.S. 19, Suite 18, Port Richey, (727) 819-1910
  • Animal Coalition of Tampa, 502 N Gilchrist Ave., Tampa, (813) 250-3900

Breed-specific rescues, non-profit animal groups and local animal control agencies can also help.

It saddens to see pets suffering because people don’t have the funds to take care of their pets (as in Harley’s case) or simply don’t want their pets anymore (in Smokey’s case). Please please know that pets are a lifetime commitment, if you ever feel overwhelmed by their care or can’t afford it, there are options out there. Don’t let an animal suffer needlessly. You can always take the pet to a shelter and surrender them. That is the most humane thing to do.

I myself am guilty of not taking pet ownership seriously and that’s why I cannot stress enough to do your research before getting a pet, they depend on you for love, food, shelter and care.

Pets are not like toys that can amuse you and then you can toss them away, they have feelings and need care.

Always consider if you can afford a pet before getting one, this includes food, toys and vet care.

In all honesty my cats have seen the vet more than I’ve seen the doctor because I want them to be healthy, they can’t tell you when they are hurting or in pain or don’t feel good. That’s why you have to keep an eye out for any strange behavior.

  • Are they eating okay?
  • Are they doing their duty like normal?
  • Are they sleeping more than normal?
  • Are their eyes half closed?
  • Are they sneezing?

I want to also thank the many responsible pet guardians that not only take care of their pets, but take on the causes of others and those that take care of their pets special needs. I cannot thank you enough for going above and beyond when others would have given up. *hugs, snuggles & purrs* to all of you.

Oh and a big big thank you to Rumpy Dog for making more conscious and aware of animal welfare issues, please check out his blog. They have very great thought provoking posts.

Pets that Blog: Meet Bacon

20130115-073946.jpg

How old are you?

I am now 18 months old.  I was born on September 15, 2011.  Mom knew it was meant to be because that is also her and dad’s anniversay – nice huh?  Mom and dad adopted me October 6, 2011.

Where did your name come from?

Mom has wanted a pet pig since she was little.  Her grandfather had a farm and she use to chase the pigs and pull their tails – it was cute when she was 5 – HEE HEE.  So she grew up wanting a pig and she *always* wanted to call him Bacon.

How did you come into your parents’ lives?

Mom had the opportunity to get a pig – finally a dream come true.  Her and daddy didn’t have children of their own and she wanted me.  She saw a picture of me and fell in love.  The moment I saw her, I fell in love.  I fell right to sleep in her arms.  It was meant to be.

How did the purr things react to you being in the house?

PLOL (Pig laughing out loud).  They were hesitant at first.  I was only three weeks and weighed 1 pound when mom adopted me.  I was what they called a runt.  The cats were so much bigger than me… at first!  Hemi is a Hemingway cat with extra toe digits and Mouse Girl is a Maine Coon.  Mom held me a lot when I first came home to get used to the Hotel Thompson.  Then she started letting me explore by myself with the purr things separated.  Then she would let one purr thing out with me for us to get used to each other.  It took about three weeks but after that – boom – we are FAMILY!

Do you ever play with them?

Me and Hemi play all of the time.  We are constantly chasing each other and slapping each other on the behinney.  There are videos of us playing around.  He even sleeps on the sofa with me sometimes when me and mom are watching television.  Mouse Girl is the princess of the house – we get along and we tolerate each other.  Heck, she tolerates Hemi.  She is daddy’s little girl all the way!

Do you ever have staring contests with the purr things?

Sometimes we will stare each other for a bit.  My favorite thing is having a staring contest with mom.  Pigs can’t look at you straight ahead.  Did you know that?  It’s the way their eyes are positioned that they have to look at you at an angle.  Me and mom stare into each others eyes and it’s like we are reading each others thoughts.  It’s kind of neat.

What is your favorite snack?

Look at this body – I like ALL food.  I guess I would have to say my favorite though is watermelon.  I LOVE watermelon – the melon, the rind and the juice.  The juice I like to slurp down.  It’s kind of funny to hear me doing that.  Mom laughs every time.

What is your favorite thing to do?

Of course, I love surfing the net, writing my blogs, answering my fan mail, sleeping and eating.  My favorite time of the day is after dinner.  That’s when it’s piggy-mommy snuggle time on the sofa.  I crawl up on the sofa and we watch television together.  Sometimes mom does her writing while I sleep.  She rubs my belly and massages my back during mommy-piggy time.  It’s the best!
20130412-100043.jpg

What myths would you like to correct about pet pigs?

We are *not* dirty animals.  In fact, we are actually clean animals.  We are sociable animals and hate to be ignored.  We actually make great pets.  On the other hand, we do require a lot of attention.  We are, in fact, attention hogs – snort.  Daddy is always telling people that Mary had a little lamb but Junie (that’s mom) has a pig.  I follow her around just like a little puppy.

What kind of pig are you?

I am a miniature pot bellied pig.

Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or the Hotel Thompson?

Hotel Thompson is great!  I have my very own room – can you believe that?  When mom knew she was adopting me, she turned the guest room into my nursery.  I have my bed, my television with cable and Netflix and my potty pad in there.  I’m not too fond of nature – heck I’ve never been outside.  I was a runt when I was born so the caregivers took me inside and bottle fed me.  Mom picked that up when she adopted me.  Mom has tried several times to get me outside into our big back yard with the rabbits.  I don’t get nature.  I have everything I need right inside of the Hotel Thompson.  Don’t all pigs live this way?

Why do you blog?

It lets out my inner pig. I’m full of thoughts and questions. I like to share those with the world to let them know I’m more than just a handsome miniature pot bellied pig.

What is your favorite post?

All of them are kind of my favorites but I really do take a special liking to my Dear Bacon issues. Those are fun and keep me on my hooves with the questions.

What post do you like the least?

Well, you know any posting from the purr things at the Hotel Thompson when they go behind my back and post on *my* blog – snort.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

Letting the world know that pigs are great pets, very loving and contrary to belief – are very clean!

What do you dislike about blogging?

Time. Sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day to get out what I want to get out. I think I need a secretary

Sneak peek on future posts? (if you want to share)

Bashful is opening up more and getting more used to talking. He might be doing some special postings in the future about his life at the Hotel Thompson. He may even post about some field trips that he has planned. Journalist Rocky the Squirrel also has some specials coming up. Since spring has finally arrived, he’s been busy collecting nuts for his little home in the back yard.

What blogs to you read that you would like to share?

That’s really hard to name just a few – what if I leave out some? I love to read about other animals, humor, comedy, paranormal ghost hunting, mysteries – just to name a few 🙂 oohh, and don’t forget about piggilicious food. I love to read about food and look at the pictures!

What are you thoughts on spaying/neutering?

Responsibility is the key. My mom was responsible when she adopted me at such a young age. I don’t remember a thing. You can’t miss what you don’t remember – PLOL (Pig Laughing Out Loud). Seriously, humans need to take care of us animals. We can’t do it ourselves. If they took the time to let “us” adopt them, they need to take care of us.

Anything else you want to add about you?

I just hope the world gets my whacked sense of piggy humor and I make them laugh. That’s my goal in every posting on my blog!

20130314-103435.jpg

Author’s Note: Yes, that’s Bacon’s butt.. it’s pretty handsome as far as pig butt’s go. 🙂  Photos were used with permission. Many many thank you’s to Mr. Bacon, his mom and Sir Bashful for answering my questions. You can follow the adventures of Bacon, Bashful and all his other friends at the blog called Pig Love.

Pets that Blog: Meet Speedy

Name:

My Name is Speedy, some friends call me Speedster or Sir Speedy….hehehe I am Speedy the Cheeky House Bunny.I live in doors but when the weather is nice I get to play in my garden!

Age:

I am about 1 and a half years old.

How you came into your parents lives:

My Mummy was looking for a new bunny to be a house bunny, but Daddy was unsure as they had just lost their bunny Thumper to the rainbow bridge.Mummy was very determined She found a nice man who was rescuing Bunnies from going to some where horrible at a animal auction,so she found out he had a couple of Rex bunnies me and a copper coloured one.Mummy made Daddy come and see us and when Daddy saw me he liked me straight away he started to scratch me then he took me out of the hutch and cuddled me then he said to Mummy that she should  hold me so she gave me a cuddle and I was so happy as I felt at home and safe in her arms that I started to chatter my teeth and Mummy heard it she mentioned it to Daddy then they put me back in the hutch,I was looking out saying don’t leave me….but they left the room I was so sad I thought they didn’t like me but Mummy told me later it was because Daddy was upset because they had just lost their bunny called Thumper. But They came back with a blue box and scooped me up saying you’re coming home with us and that’s when Daddy called me Speedy.I soon lived up to my Name!

Why do you blog?

Mummy started the blog to share my journey through life and all my adventures good and bad and tips on being a bunny parent but she soon realised that I had a big character and voice the needed to be heard so its became my blog although Mummy still does all the serious stuff about being a bunny parent.

What is your favorite post?

My favourite post is the one’s on my adventure’s with Santa with my Friends,Plus I love the party celebration posts for different occasions like my friend Maddys Gotcha Day.I do love a good party!

What post do you like the least?

I love all of my posts even the ones Mummy did about me when I was attacked by a mean Kitty when I was playing in my garden.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

My favourite thing about Blogging is having fun, having parties and Just being Cheeky…hehehe….Oh and meeting up with all my blogging pals and having fun with them. And thats how I met my adopted Auntie’s Jane,Brandi,Karen Michelle and Lorna….I love my Aunites!

What to you dislike about blogging?

my least favourite thing about Blogging is saying good bye to pals to the rainbow bridge.

Sneak peek on future posts?

Mummy is going to carry on with our bunny care 101 post’s as it is very important to get that information out there as lots of people don’t really know how to care for us properly. We are also going to make a very big announcement soon but Mummy say’s we have to wait till she is ready.

What blogs to you read that you would like to share?

There are so many blogs that I read that it would be a very long list but I love them all!

What are you thoughts on spaying/neutering?

I think Spaying and Neutering is very important as there are to many unwanted pets in the world from uncontrolled breeding,if all pets were neutered or spayed there wouldn’t be such a great need for rescue centres and shelters.I my self have been neutered.

Anything else you want to add about you?

When Mummy and Daddy brought me home they noticed the my Left eye looked a bit bigger and strange to my right one I was about 16 weeks old then a few months later they could see I was have problems with my vision and it was looking cloudy it was then we found out I had glaucoma, its and genetic problem  as I have always had it and I now have drops in it to keep the pressure down and keep it comfortable. Being a house bunny is lucky for me as it keeps me safe and I get lots of fun play time with Mummy and Daddy,That’s how they found out how Cheeky I was and how much of a sense of humour I have.Hehehe….some times I am a bit naughty too like biting the carpet and doing my Houdini act, and I love to trampoline on my Mummy when we play together and most of all I love my cuddles with Mummy. And with Daddy I love to play chase….hehehehe when we play chase I jump up in the air cause I think it funny when Daddy chase’s after me!
xxx Speedy!

Pets that Blog: Meet Savannah

Introduce yourself:

Name:

Well, my name…ummm…this can be complicated. You see, I have 3 names actually. Of course, as you know, my third name is just for me to know…not even Mom and Dad will ever know that name…that’s just the way we cats are about our very personal third name as no other cat will ever have the same third name as mine. Mr TS Eliot explains it all in his poem “The Naming of Cats”.

But, my first name is one you and everybody can know…heh…heh…and you already do…SAVANNAH!

Age:

I am 6 years oldish…I really don’t know exactly when I was born.

How you came into your parents lives:(adoption/found, etc)

Now that is a long story, but if you have time and space on your blog post…here is a shorter version. I am an adult shelter rescue cat. In November, 2010, someone dropped me in the night box at the county kill shelter; they didn’t leave any information about me. That shelter tried to get me adopted by leaving me at a Petsmart store, in a little cage, for a whole month—I never got out to play or anything. Then I caught a respiratory virus and had to go back to that shelter to be treated. They actually sent me to another Petsmart for another month. Still, no one wanted me.

So they brought me back to be destroyed. The day before I was on to be killed, a nice lady said she would take me home to foster me until a spot opened up at a no kill private shelter she knew. Miss Tammy saved my life.

Then I went to live at Kitty Corner, a small cat shelter for adult cats which is owned and operated by Contra Costa Humane Society in Pleasant Hill, California. I was terrified of everyone, even the other cats. So I hid all day, I never played and never came out for anyone to pet me. I grazed through the food dishes at night and because I never got exercise, I developed a bit of a big butt eventually. I have had to really work hard to get back in shape…(stands up…) See! Don’t I look great now?

Sorry, I did digress huh? So, sometimes the volunteers would pay attention to me; a couple of them even pulled me out to brush me and I really liked that. Anywho, Mom and Dad started to volunteer at Kitty Corner and Dad learned about me. He always took extra time with me the first couple of weeks they worked. And then they decided to foster me to help me become more sociable so I could get adopted.

After 3 weeks, the first two I was UTB, they looked at each other and I saw them smile. They left and came back home and told me I was now in my furrever home. TAA DAA!!

New NNNM 1

Why do you blog?

Well, it was my idea and I asked Mom if she would help me and she said yes. You see, I really want to try and help other adult shelter cats and dogs find their furrever homes and I thought if I shared my recovery progress, you know…from all the trauma and what not I have been through, then maybe it would encourage more people to adopt adult cats and dogs.

I also Tweet and pawticipate in Nip Club pawties and I have a great Facebook page too.

What is your favorite post?

Oh Cat! That is such a tough question…h….(tapping paw up, down, up, down…)…I would have to say it was Part One of my repurrting on Operation Save The Royals. You can read it here: http://savannahspawtracks.com/2013/03/11/monday-meowsie-news-28/

What post do you like the least?

That one is easier…I did not like writing my post asking my readers about their perspectives on de-vocaliztion of cats and dogs. Not fun writing it at all. http://savannahspawtracks.com/2012/10/27/savannahs-saturday-sounding-board/

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

DUH!! Meeting all my furriends!! What a pawsome community paw bloggers are!

What do you dislike about blogging?

That I can’t always visit all my furriends consistently and frequently and I don’t get to visit new blogs very much anymore. Mom and I are working on finding ways to improve on this situation.

Sneak peek on future posts? (if you want to share)

Well, I have this series called “Life Changing Interviews With Savannah: Real Rescue Cats/Dogs Are Talking”…and I have interviewed two cats, “queens”, who escaped from being used in kitty mills. I am going to do some research and repurrt on my learning about how prevalent this practice is across the world. I know about puppy mills, but not kitty mills.

What blogs do you read that you would like to share?

Way too many to write about here. I am trying to update my blog roll so you can come by and see them there in a couple of weeks, ‘kay??

What are you thoughts on spaying/neutering?

Well that’s another “Duh!”…like doesn’t just everyone do it???..na’mean??

Anything else you want to add about you?

I don’t think so actually. I am a very simple lady cat…I am working hard on trying to be more brave and I am trying to decide if I want to let Mom pick me up…stuff like that…lots more for me to do so I can show more and more of my REAL SELF.
